Felt Crafts
Felt is a great crafting material for children. It can be used in so many different ways that you have many options when you begin craft time. Felt can be used for decorations, activities, and fun craft projects. It is more durable than construction paper and leaves a lot less mess to clean up than painting. Felt should be one of the standard craft materials you keep around for your children, since it lends itself to almost any project.
All projects involving felt have some necessary items in common. For just about any felt project you will need child safe scissors to cut the felt into pieces. Markers can be useful for tracing out designs before the cutting starts. From there it really depends on what you are planning on creating with your kids. If they have a felt board then that’s all you need. Let them get creative making playing pieces and scenery for their board.
Most felt projects involve a bit more. Glue and needles and thread are also good things to keep around for felt projects. Glue can be used when you don’t want thread showing through, or if you don’t want your children handling needles. However, felt can be a great place to start teaching your children how to sew. Many companies sell blunt needles that are perfect for children to begin with, and generally these needles are big enough for embroidery thread which is perfect to use on felt.
For projects involving glue and thread your options are pretty much only limited by your (and your child’s) imagination. Decorate plain bags, accessories, and clothing; create pin cushions; make ornaments and little stuffed animals. If you can dream it up odds are you and your children will have a blast creating it with felt.
